Son of God - Jesus Christ - Spectacular Miracles

If Jesus was God, then the miracles should be so spectacular that they could not be reproduced or faked.  When you read the Gospels, not once does someone contend that the miracles did not happen, that the miracles were fake.  For example, in Matthew 12:22 Jesus healed the demon-possessed man who was blind and mute.  Since the Pharisees could not dispute the miracle, they contended who had the power to do the miracles.  Thus, they accused Jesus of being the prince of demons:  "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." (Matthew 11:24)
As the Son of God, Jesus Christ performed genuine miracles that no one could fake.

Son of God - Jesus Christ - Many miracles

If you were the Son of God, then  you would expect the Son of God to perform miracles.  And that is exactly what Jesus Christ did.  He performed 35 miracles in three years.  That is one per month and these are the recorded miracles.  There were many others that were not recorded.  His apostle John wrote:  "Jesus did many other things as well.  If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

U.S. has third highest birthrate of teenagers

In the latest study, the U.S. has the third highest birthrate among teenagers 15-19 and among the blacks 72% of all births are out of wedlock.  Despite ubiquitous information on how children are conceived, there is an avalanche of out of wedlock births.  This does not bode well for the future of our country as children raised in single-parent families do not do well.  Part of the problem is that there is no guilt associated with out-of-wedlock births.  Single parenthood is celebrated.  The good Lord designed a family of a father and a mother to take care of the children.  When that God-designed family disappears, problems occur.

Lord, we ask You to send your Holy Spirit upon our country that we would turn towards You.

Just War Theory

jus ad bellum

The second part of the Just War Theory is how do you fight wars?  The first idea is proportionality.  For example, after 9/11 attacks there were pictures on the internet of a nuclear bomb over Afghanistan making it into a glass sea.  That clearly is not a proportional response.  You can not nuke a country of 21 million people for the death of 3,000 Americans.  The second idea is one of protected people and places.  In Iraq there were and are Muslim snipers in mosques.  Why there?  Because they knew that the U.S. would not be able to shoot at a mosque because it was a protected place.  Even though the snipers could be taken out, the U.S. often did not shoot at the mosque.  The U.S. cannot shoot at civilians.  That is why the Muslims often use suicide bombers - dressed in civilian clothes, because they know that our troops are forbidden to murder civilians.

Lord, give our troops discernment on when to shoot and when not to shoot.

Just War Theory

jus in bello

There are two parts of the Just War Theory.  The first part is "When is it permissible to wage war?"  First, there must be proper authority - individuals can not declare war.  War can only be declared by the state.  Thus, in Western thought, Osama Bin Laden did not have the right to declare war as he was an individual, while in Muslim thought an individual has that right.
The second part of the Just War theory is that war must have a proper cause.  Thus, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was illegal as there was no proper cause.  War cannot be fought for territorial gain, nor to seek revenge.  When the U.S. fought back, it liberated Kuwait and the U.S. did not try to seize Kuwait or Iraq.  The U.S. had the power to make those countries a province or a U.S. territory.  But we did not.

Lord, help us to fight for righteousness sake.

In Defense of Christendom

In the 20 Oct 15 edition of The Wall Street Journal, Bret Stephens wrote an article entitled In Defense of Christendom.  He writes "What is Europe?  It is Greece, not Persia; Rome not Carthage; Christendom, not the caliphate.  These distinctions are fundamental. . . Having ignored its inheritance, Europe wonders why its house is falling apart."
This is why I teach Western Civilization.  I am trying to show why we are different.  Lord willing, tomorrow I will be teaching St. Augustine's just war theory.  Christians fight differently.

Lord, help us to maintain our uniqueness as Christians.  Helps us to shine a light so that others may see.

If you want to be rich . . .

TV or the Bible

In today's Sunday paper there was an interesting article on riches and watching TV.  Two thirds of rich people spent less than an hour a day watching TV and 77% of poor people spent more than an hour a day watching TV.
But how much time do you spend in heavenly riches?  Do you spend an hour a day in devotions?

Josh Ostrovsky on Fate

God Rules!

Josh Ostrovsky, aka the Fat Jew, is a comedian and social-media personality.  (Interestingly, The Wall Street Journal Magazine never interviewed a theologian.  They interviewed Larry King (see previous blog), a restaurant owner, a fashion designer, an author, etc. but no scholar or theologian.  Maybe it was because they don't know any Christians.)
Josh said "I'm a big fan of the fact that we're on a giant rock hurtling through outer space at like a billion miles per hour, that we're just a bunch of talking dots.  That's kind of crazy and scary to think about  . . "
Josh captures the hopelessness of the world.  Instead of seeing man created in God's image and placed on the earth to worship and praise Him, we are just a bunch of dots hurtling through space.

Lord, we praise you for creating the world!  We praise you for making us unique and with purpose and that this world was not formed randomly.

Larry King on Fate

God Rules!

Larry King, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, states that after 60,000 interviews "I think it's all a major, incredible accident."  But then he writes "Death is the only predetermined thing."
But why is death predetermined and nothing else?
    Who predetermines death?
Larry King shows his inconsistency - and never answers why.  Nor does he answer how life on earth can be an incredible accident.  Why is it this world at exactly the right distance from the sun?  How did it happen that life is on earth?
We know the answer!  God rules.

Thank you Lord for making us on this planet and thank you Lord that You are never surprised.

Planned Parenthood and the Fight for Our Lives

Lives hang in the balance

Katrina vanden Heuvel, a Washington Post editorialist, wrote that "lives hang in balance" and "This is a fight for our lives, and it’s time to take the fight to the extremists, to stand up not just for Planned Parenthood, but also for the people who need it most."  She pleads that we need to stop the war on women.
Unfortunately, the abortionists are waging the war on women.  We should indeed stand up "for the people who need it the most," and that is the unborn who can't speak up for themselves and are the most defenseless.  Their lives are on the line, not the lives of their mothers.  And with the advent of sex selection abortions, far more females are aborted than males.  There is a war being fought against women - a war that treats them as a cash machine - a war that dehumanizes them - a war that aborts far more females than males.

Lord, we pray for the life of the unborn.

Celebration on 01 November 2015

Lord willing, on 01 November our church will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary.  Like all, we have had our ups and downs, but God has been faithful to us these last 40 years.  We will be having the founding minister preach.
Lord willing, on 01 November our church will be installing our fifth minister, Rev Petr Kornilov.  We are going from a minister born in the Netherlands to a minister born in Russia.  The church is world wide and we praise God for that.
Lord willing, on 01 November our church will be celebrating the Reformation - and the five truths -
Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority.
Sola Fide (“faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.
Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King.
Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): We live for the glory of God alone.
Please come and celebrate with us!

Information and Planned Parenthood Defenders

How can you make a decision if you don't know all the facts?  Worse, how can you make a decision if you deliberately refuse to review facts that are readily available?  Some Democrats refusal to watch Planned Parenthood videos about them selling body parts is shocking.  They say they are for the truth, but don't examine the truth when it is presented to them.

Lord, please open their eyes and then their hearts so they will understand the evil of Planned Parenthood.

Purity

This past weekend we I was able to preach at a small church in Vermont, two miles away from where my grandmother was born.  I worshipped in the church when I was a young lad when we were in Vermont for vacations.  I even remember one of the sermons - it was on Selah, which is Hebrew for think on that.
After the service I asked a woman her name (I had seen her before and had forgotten it) and then I asked where she lived.  She said she was the minister's partner and came late as she was busy with yoga.

Lord, we pray for a spiritual revival in Vermont.

Oregon Shoots Christians becasue They are Christians

Buried deep in this report of the shooting, (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/05/us/oregon-umpqua-shooting-survivor/) there is this statement:   "One by one, the gunman called for individuals to stand up -- performing a grim roll call to find out their religion.  "He asked them, 'Are you Christian? Do you believe in God?' " Heu said. "And then they said yes and he said, 'Good, I'll send you to God. You'll be visiting God pretty soon,' and he shoots them."  Another time Heu said the shooter asked if someone was Catholic "and they said 'yeah' and he still shot them."

The fact that Christians were singled out has been largely ignored by the press but after the Charleston shooting at the church and now this shootings, we can now understand better the persecuted church.

Lord, forgive them for they know not what they do.

Buddhism - Evil Thoughts

Scott Palczak, a Buddhist wrote "Buddhism also has common sense: why indulge in counterproductive angry, negative thoughts all day? A rational person realizes that constantly nurturing negative thoughts results in: alcoholism, criminal mischief, trips to jail, drunken tantrums, drunken debauchery, bar room brawls, contusions, street-corner ranting, visits to local mental institutions."

Glenn's response:  Buddhism and Christianity view the world as being full of evil.  In Colossians 3 we read "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:  sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry."  Although this was written by Paul, it could be just as well written for America in 2015.  Note these are common sins today - sexual immorality, lust, greed.

Lord, help us put to death these sins.
